  Quiritus did not know how to answer--she had never been in love—she was only 14, and she did not know the feelings yet, but she could feel the ghost girl’s grief and she promised to keep it a secret.

  2. A Pledge 
  一个誓言 
  Loki was no fool. He knew when something wasn’t going right or his way and he felt it this time in the blowing wind. So, a monster top-gun meeting was called for. Doppel attended it against Maya’s advice. There, Loki once again preached that a war between humans and monsters was a must. 
  “They have taken our resources; they have plotted against us; and they wanted to destroy us. We must not tolerate it! And war is eminent!” 
  Even though after being told by Maya to not say a word, Doppel could not take it anymore, so he cried out, “Humans and monsters are not enemies! Loki is our enemy!” 
  “What do you mean boy?’ asked Dark Illusion, a bit shocked. 
  “Exactly what I said!” 
  They argued a little more. Finally Doppel said, “If you hate humans so much, if you want to kill them, you have to start with me!” With that, he pulled the horns out of his head, sending blood gushing everywhere. “For I am a human!” 
  There were many gasps. Finally Dark Illusion said, “All right, you shall die first---human or not.” 
  “No, please allow me,” said Zeolotus, a slender girl ghost with a head of silver locks cascading down her shoulders came forward, with whom Doppel fought. Soon, Zeolotus had the upper hand---no one could fight and win Zeolotus since she trained many of them, she trained Doppel, too, and she was by far the most skillful and talented. She tangled her whip like a snake around Dopple’s right arm and threw him out the window, but, when Dopple’s face was close to hers, she whispered so only he could hear: “Hurry and find that merchant of yours!” 
  When Doppel was thrown out of the window, Zeolotus let go of the whip so it was caught on the edge of the cliff, and since Dopple’s hand was strapped to it, he lived. 
  Of course no one else saw this. 
  “Out the window?” said Dark Illusion incredulously. “You’re sure that kid is dead?”
